Trading TILT — When Your Brain Takes Over
You know the feeling.
One trade goes against you. Then another. And suddenly you’re not trading any more — you’re just reacting. Bigger size. Tighter patience. Worse decisions.
You can feel it happening and you still can’t stop it.
That’s TILT. And it’s not a mindset failure — it’s your brain doing exactly what it’s designed to do, at exactly the wrong moment.
Here’s the sequence:
T — Threat. A loss registers in your brain as a threat to survival. Not metaphorically. Literally. The same system that would fire if you stepped into traffic fires when your account takes a hit.
I — Instinct. Your instinctive brain takes over from your logical brain. This happens in a third to half a second — long before you’re consciously aware of it.
L — Loss. Once instinct is driving, you stop trading your plan and start trading your emotions. More losses follow. Which feeds straight back into the threat response. The cycle accelerates.
T — Trap. You’re now trapped in a loop. Logic is locked out. The only way out is for the loop to either burn itself out — usually after the damage is done — or for something to interrupt it from outside.
Sound familiar?
If it does, you’re not alone. TILT is one of the most common reasons traders who know exactly what they’re doing still can’t stay consistent.
