BrainWorking Recursive Therapy® Explained
The speed of thought is faster than you think!
The Core Problem
Most people already know, logically, what they’d like to feel or do differently. The real difficulty is that the unwanted reaction — the anxiety, the panic, the fear, the intrusive thought — happens automatically, before conscious thought ever gets involved.
These reactions aren’t a failure of willpower. They’re learned patterns: the brain recognised something as a threat once, filed away the response, and now fires that same response automatically whenever something similar happens again — often decades later, and often long after the original context has stopped being relevant.
Because this happens before conscious awareness, trying to reason your way out of it, or simply “push through”, rarely works for long. BWRT® is designed to work precisely at this level — before the reaction takes hold, not after.

How BWRT® Works
- Identifying the Trigger
The focus isn’t on the situation itself, but on the exact moment your brain decides something is wrong — a thought, a sensation, a memory, or a specific circumstance that sets the reaction in motion.
- Stopping the Emotional Loop
Once the trigger point is identified, BWRT uses a specific technique to create what’s best described as an emotional deep freeze — cutting power to the emotional circuit before it can produce the fear, panic or distress. No emotional surge, no stress response, no automatic reaction.
- Installing a New Response
BWRT then installs the response you’d prefer to have instead — not something you have to remember or force yourself to do, but a new automatic default that simply replaces the old one.
- Lasting, Natural Integration
From that point on, the brain recognises the previously triggering situation without generating the old threat response. Clients often describe this as the situation simply feeling “informational” rather than threatening — the difference between reacting and just noticing.
What a BWRT Session Feels Like
A BWRT session is highly structured, solution-focused, and doesn’t require you to relive or repeatedly discuss the original event in detail — the practitioner only needs to know how you feel now and how you’d prefer to feel instead. Most clients describe a noticeable reduction in internal noise: clearer thinking, quieter emotions, and a sense of calm they may not have felt in years.

Why Results Often Feel Fast and Lasting
BWRT doesn’t train discipline or coping strategies — it removes the automatic reaction that made a coping strategy necessary in the first place. Once the brain no longer fires the old response, there’s nothing left to manage or suppress day to day. That’s why results are typically described as fast, and why there are no ongoing exercises or homework required once therapy is complete.
Where BWRT Came From
In 1983, scientist Benjamin Libet discovered that we begin to react to information about half a second before we’re even consciously aware of it. In 2011, Terence Watts MCGI — an educator, author and innovator in full-time private practice since 1989 — realised this gap could be used therapeutically, and BrainWorking Recursive Therapy® was born. It was taught for the first time in 2013.
In 2014, South African Clinical Psychologist Rafiq Lockhat became Terence’s research partner, using BWRT extensively for PTSD and complex trauma in his own clinic. All trainers of BWRT are selected by the Terence Watts BWRT Institute and adhere to the same training programme, ensuring consistency in technical standards worldwide.
Evidence and Credibility
BWRT® has been the subject of a PhD awarded by Lincoln University, UK. Professors at the University of Bergen, Norway were impressed enough that in 2021 they funded and organised a clinical trial — delayed by Covid, restarted in 2023, and now complete, with results described as excellent. The paper is expected to be published during 2026.
BWRT is used internationally by trained, accredited practitioners across clinical, coaching and high-performance environments.
